Vintage 18K Gold Mystery (Invisible) Set Ruby & Diamond Clover Brooch, Circa 1950s
This vintage ruby and diamond clover brooch showcases one of jewelry's most extraordinary techniques: invisible setting. The metal nearly vanishes, allowing 205 precisely cut rubies to become the design itself, creating an uninterrupted sea of ruby red.
The rich ruby leaves surround a sparkling cluster of brilliant-cut diamonds, while a graceful stem, lined with baguette diamonds set in white gold, adds just the right amount of contrast. It's bold without being oversized, and beautifully sculptural from every angle.
Made famous by Van Cleef and Arpels, invisible setting reached its golden age in the mid-20th century and is now rarely seen outside exceptional vintage jewelry. Some techniques don't disappear because they're forgotten—they disappear because they're almost impossible to execute.
