Antique Edwardian GIA 4.90ctw No-Heat Blue Sapphire & Old Mine Diamond 18K Gold Rosette Drop Earrings, Circa 1900
There is something wonderfully romantic about finding an antique jewel that looks as though it has stepped directly out of an old portrait.
Rosette and cluster earrings of this form were particularly beloved around the turn of the 20th century, and variations can be seen in period photographs and portraits throughout Russia and Continental Europe. Centered with a richly colored gemstone and framed by a halo of individually set old-cut diamonds, the design was elegant enough for formal dress yet intimate enough to become a cherished personal jewel.
This exceptional pair dates to circa 1900 and beautifully captures that aesthetic.
At their centers are two natural oval-cut blue sapphires weighing approximately 2.50 carats combined, displaying a deep, saturated blue with flashes of vivid color as they move in the light. The sapphires are GIA certified as natural and unheated, an increasingly desirable distinction in antique gemstones.
GIA Report #2243012798.
Historically, sapphires from Siam and neighboring deposits were an important part of the international gemstone trade during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, prized for their characteristically rich blue color.
Surrounding the sapphires are 20 antique Old Mine Cut diamonds, approximately 2.40 carats total weight, estimated G–I color and VS–SI clarity. Their individually cut facets give the earrings the unmistakable soft, lively sparkle that belongs to antique diamonds—beautifully contrasting with the intense blue of the sapphires.
The earrings are crafted in 18K yellow gold and finished with hinged back fittings. This secure style of fastening became increasingly popular in fine jewelry toward the end of the 19th century and remains remarkably comfortable and practical more than a century later.
Although the earrings are unsigned and bear no surviving hallmarks, their construction, proportions, setting style and fittings are consistent with Russian or Continental European jewelry of the period.
